The Riverside Prep Elementary Music program teaches the fundamentals of music to all elementary students, through singing and playing instruments. Every year, students from all grade levels (Transitional Kindergarten through 5th Grade) sing and play percussion instruments for our holiday concert in December. In the spring, students grades 2-5 learn to play the piano, while focusing on the fundamentals of music notation. They also have opportunities to write their own songs. Additionally, in the Spring, Grades 4 and 5 begin preparing for Middle School Band by learning to play the recorder (plastic flute). We are excited to bring the opportunity for every RP Elementary student to play and experience music!
Physical Education with Mr. Kohn and Mr. Barnhart incorporates sportsmanship, healthy living, sports skills, and developing aspects of lifelong fitness. Both P.E. classes coordinate activities so that students receive a wide exposure to both traditional and non-traditional forms of physical activity.
In technology all students learn how to properly use a computer and type correctly with both hands using the home row. Second grade and up learn how to use the Office Suite, which includes programs like Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel. In fifth grade they will learn how to manipulate a picture of themselves using pixlr.com
which is similar to photoshop. Fourth grade learns basic features of an architecture design program called Sketchup, where they design there own house.
Riverside Prep's Elementary Art Program focuses on teaching students the Elements of Art and Principles of Design through ceramics, collage, painting and drawing. They participate in class critiques where they offer valuable feedback to fellow students using art appropriate vocabulary. Each year, we host a fourth and fifth grade art show in April, an opportunity for students to collaborate on projects and defend the choices they make to their peers and families. Third, fourth, and fifth grade students keep sketchbooks that they work in daily to build their artistic skills. Fourth and fifth grade students also maintain a portfolio, in which they keep all of their artwork throughout the year for reflection. Our art program also invites parents and students to make art projects together at Family Art Night. Our next Family Art Night is October 20th, for 2nd and 3rd grade. The 4th and 5th Art Night will be November 15th. Interested families must sign up.
